Depending on where you’re from, different traditions take a different form. You don’t have to be from that region, of course. If something strikes your fancy, you can adopt a tradition just because you want to.

If you want to avoid the crowds, you can just relax at home and watch a movie. There are New Year’s themed movies to choose from, but you aren’t limited to those of course.

If you don’t feel like taking on the burden of food and drinks for your guests, ask them to bring the food and drinks. In exchange, you’re providing the location and entertainment for the party.

Most people drink champagne when the ball drops at midnight, but any drink will do just fine. For variety, you can provide wine, beer, and cocktails as well.

You can cook up some fun New Year’s themed party food. Fancy cheese and crackers, party pastries, hors d'oeuvres, and a variety of deserts will please your guests. If you don’t want to put the effort into doing that, any food that is easy to pass around will work, or order some pizzas (just make sure you order early).

Holidays are a great opportunity to get crafty. You can create your own New Year's themed party favors. Hats, confetti, and noisemakers are great New Year’s party favors.

If you don’t want to go out to celebrate the New Year, invite people over to your place. You can invite a few people for a small gathering, or throw a big New Year’s bash.

What’s more romantic than celebrating new beginnings? Grab your loved one, make a reservation (way ahead of time), and share the New Year together over a nice meal. You can follow that up with some colorful fireworks and a midnight kiss.

Gather some of your friends and arrange a meet up at one of your favorite locations. It could be a bowling alley, restaurant, club, or city park. Decide ahead of time what to wear, who brings what, and any other details. You’re basically planning an impromptu party.

Give to those less fortunate. Spread the Christmas cheer by giving to those who are doing it tough. Consider donating to a charity on someone else's behalf and give this to them as a gift. As well as money, many charities also accept household items, clothes and groceries at Christmas, or you could volunteer your time to help them out.

Rethink your wrapping by buying brown paper and string, or just use plain coloured paper to wrap your presents. Then you'll avoid pricey Christmas wrapping and can use the excess during the year to wrap other gifts.

Write a letter to your loved ones instead of sending a card. This is a great way to tell them how much they mean to you, or thank them for something special they might have done for you this year.

I like decorating my house in a Candyland theme each year. If you have the same type of theme, try this: Decorate a small glass jar with a ribbon around it and fill it with multi-colored candy. Then place one at each place setting for dinner. This not only adds to the table decorations, but you can write the person’s name on the jar and make it a small gift for him or her to take home.

Put a candle in a glass jar or bowl for the kids’ table at Christmas or just to use as a cute decoration. Fill the rest of the bowl around the bottom of the candle with cinnamon candies, peppermints, nuts or colored gum balls or jaw breakers.

Do you like to have fresh greenery in your home for Christmas? Go to any place that sells Christmas trees (tree lots, Lowe’s, Walmart, etc.) and ask for the branches and cuttings that have fallen off. They are usually glad to get them off of their hands since they’re just going to throw them away. Besides using them for decorations, try tucking them in and around your artificial tree to give it that fresh tree smell. (We sometimes go to a local park after a windy day and collect freshly fallen evergreen boughs.)
